How To Keep The Wrinkles Out Of Your Birthday Suit

Anyone who knows me, even a little, knows I am a research freak. If I could, I would spend my days researching stuff like it’s my job. Only “stuff” I find interesting, of course.

When the big 4-0 came to claim me a few years back I started researching ways to preserve this skin of mine. Or at least slow down the rate of super wrinkled skin that I know is coming. I feared falling to the fate of my beautiful Swedish Aunties whose wrinkles started breeding more, and more, wrinkles at a rapid pace, so they looked way beyond their years by their late 40’s! Imagine taking a plastic baggy, rolling it between your hands a couple hundred times, then straighten it out! You can’t, and you can’t tell where one wrinkle begins or where it ends! Scary, I know! (Of course they were serious sun worshippers in their youth. Back when you rubbed cooking oil all over yourself to ensure maximum bronzing.)

So what have my hours of research taught me? NOTHING is more important than keeping your birthday suit from getting too dry!

Keeping your skin moisturized is definitely a “from the inside out” type of operation. Drinking plenty of water everyday being numero uno! (Think of the 8 by 8 rule. Eight 8oz glasses a day. There is no hard evidence that this is the magic number, but it’s the one your most likely to hear from your doctor.) Add to that, eating foods that contain healthy lipids (fats), and getting adequate protein in your diet. (These three are really non-negotiable.)

From the outside, of course, use a natural moisturizer. A moisturizer that contains Jojoba Oil is fabulous as Jojoba mimics our skins sebum. (Our body butters are ALL made with Jojoba! (Hint! Hint!) Argan Oil, Coconut Oil, Avocado Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Mango Butter, Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, Avocado Butter, and Kokum Butter are just a few examples of skin loving, natural moisturizers.

I purchased a research paper, a year ago, that changed everything for me, especially the trajectory of my fated “Swedish Aunty” skin. It explained the “when” and ‘how” of moisturizing. Here it is! Wait for it!! Apply your moisturizer when you are in the shower or before drying off! Applying your moisturizer when your skin is warm, and still wet, locks in the moisture from the water! How cool is that?! If you apply moisturizer at night, hold a warm, wet washcloth against your face for a minute or so and then apply your moisturizer. If you are too darn tired for that bit just spray your face with your “Refresh Your Face” toner (another hint!) and apply the moisturizer while it’s still wet.

This has been my routine for the past year, and while I am certainly not wrinkle free, I am certain it has kept a multitude of them at bay. All the reminder I need to keep this routine going is looking at those old pics of my aunties. God bless them!
